Storms
Sections about this hazard
What's the issue?
A storm is a strong wind event that causes damage to nature, infrastructure and buildings. The extent of damage caused depends on wind speed and the frequency of gusts. Extensive storm damage occurs when a storm front passes by. Storms are especially common during the winter months. Local storm damage can be caused by thunderstorms that mainly occur during the summer months. On lakes, strong winds generate high waves. Storms occur regularly in Switzerland.
What does this mean for me?
Flying or falling objects may cause lethal injuries. Strong winds cause damage to buildings and other infrastructure. Railway lines and roads are frequently blocked by objects. If power lines are destroyed, power outages may result. The mobile phone grids may be overburdened. It is possible that you will not be able leave the building you are in for several hours.
