Heavy snowfall

What's the issue?

Heavy snowfall causes obstructions in road, rail and air traffic. Especially in the mountains, roads and railway lines are closed if there is prolonged heavy snowfall. In the high mountain regions the danger of avalanches increases, which may lead to roads and railway lines being closed. After several consecutive heavy snowfalls, the weight on the roofs of houses may, even in the lowlands, cause damage or the snow to slide off of inclined roofs. Heavy snowfall is frequent in Switzerland, especially in the Alpine region.

What does this mean for me?

Heavy snowfall may interrupt road, rail and air traffic. The weight of great masses of snow can push in roofs, break off tree branches or damage overhead powerlines, resulting in electricity and telecommunications being interrupted. Entire areas may be cut off and it can take hours to days before they can be accessed and supplied again safely. If buildings in mountain regions are threatened by avalanches you must, depending on the instructions of the local authorities, either stay within the building or you will be evacuated. Roads may be closed as a precaution.

  1. Stay away from trees and roofs (danger of falling trees, breaking branches, snow sliding off of roofs).
  2. If avalanches are imminent, stay within the building and close the shutters of windows facing the mountain.
  3. Obtain information on current developments and obey the instructions of local authorities.

General behavioural recommendations

  1. Inform yourself via radio and television and follow the instructions given by the authorities and emergency organisations.
  2. Call the emergency services only in an emergency.
  3. Use the telephone and other important means of communication only for important and urgent requirements (danger of network overload).
  4. Use cars and other means of transport only for important and urgent requirements (danger of traffic overload).
  5. Act particularly careful in traffic (danger due to breakdown of traffic lights, barriers etc.).
  6. Inform and support neighbours and people needing assistance in your vicinity.
