Cold spell

During cold spells, temperatures remain below zero even in the lowlands for several days or even weeks. Cold spells are the result of the influx of cold arctic or Siberian bodies of air. During severe, long-lasting cold spells, the heating systems of buildings may reach the limit of their capacity. Long-lasting cold spells are rare in Switzerland.

Long-lasting cold spells damage infrastructure such as roads, railway lines and water mains. Due to bad road conditions mobility may be limited. Conduits may freeze and affect the water supply. The electric power supply may also be reduced. Because of the unusually low temperatures outside, you are more susceptible to illnesses such as colds and the flu.

1. If possible, avoid activities outside and driving. If the roads are icy, you should drive accordingly, especially in traffic.
2. Prepare for a possible power outage.
3. Ground frost can damage plants and cultures and also interfere with the building trade.
